Pocket Square 101
Ever since men started wearing coats, a piece of cloth or ornament was used to help them stand out. Others would believe that the pocket square was utilized out as a necessity. Whatever the theory, squares have been around for thousands of years. Today, no well groomed man looks complete without a pocket square in the left breast pocket of his coat. Pocket Squares come in all types of materials and fabrics. Solid colored cotton squares (which are usually white) project a very professional appearance. Colored cotton squares can also be professional if color coordinated with other accessories. Lighter luxurious fabrics such as silk or rayon are proper for more formal events; they stand out on their own and can be utilized without a necktie in most cases. There are infinite ways to fold a pocket square, we will focus on the fundamentals. A straight square fold is best with a cotton square and is very professional. Pointed folds can also be used in a professional or business-casual event. The same can be said for a Cagney fold. Puff folds are great for casual and elegant events alike, as long as the fold is made of silk, rayon or other lightweight fabric. |
